SXSWi, “the biggest of its kind in the world,” according to festival organizers, focuses on emerging technology and takes place in Austin, Texas each spring. NonprofitCommunity was there last week and we’re still recovering from information overload (not to mention sore feet)! Many of our authors were there too, and it was great to meet with them face to face and to see them in action in their sessions, at their book signings, and at networking events. It was a challenge to keep up with them, though. They were a busy bunch!
Brian Reich (@brianreich), author of Shift and Reset, and information strategist, recorded a series of podcasts daily during SXSWi. These “ShiftCasts” brought together some of the most innovative minds at SXSW for a discussion series about how companies, nonprofits and startups can work together to change the world.
On Day Three, Brian and ShiftCast brought together Amy Sample Ward (@amyrsward), membership director for NTEN and coauthor of the upcoming book from Jossey-Bass Social Change Anytime Everywhere, Uwe Hook, co-founder and CEO of Bates Hook, and Kevin Lloyd, founder and CEO of Momentum OS, Inc., to discuss the role of corporations and brands in social impact, who is doing it right, and who is doing it wrong. Listen to the ShiftCast on NewEmpireBuilders.com.
David Neff (@daveiam) coauthor of The Future of Nonprofits hosted a panel discussion entitled The Hyper Local Public TV Station: Content 3.0 which was Storified nicely here and here.
Melanie Mathos (@melmatho), author of 101 Social Media Tactics for Nonprofits, had this to say
“As an author focused on nonprofits and social media, I was surprised that the social good element was less apparent than in years’ past. There were some fantastic sessions, but the big bucks cause marketing partnerships were nowhere to be seen. Perhaps this is from the increased focus on the election and startup-mania? Or maybe because giving is back to pre-recession levels and the increased demand for services isn’t as apparent (hence hip?) Hope it isn’t foretelling for the share of voice philanthropy gets in the coming year.”
Melanie and coauthor, Chad Norman (@chadnorman), also led an impressive session on social media tactics for nonprofits.
